Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

We are the flesh. Mexico.
10/10
Having just watched the film, i can say i really have know idea what the fuck was going on, but i was totally taken in by it.
There are just three central characters, for the most part. A brother, sister, 'homeless' bloke.
I would have to watch/read an analysis to have any idea about what was actually going on it was that weird. But it took several taboo subjects, broke then up and force-fed them to the audience. It was more 'arthouse' film than a regular by the numbers and that in the end really made the film.
It fits in with the films from Mexico like Here comes the devil and We are what we are.
This one was more edgy it in a good fucked up way.

Alone. 2007. Thailand.
6/10
Siamese twins horror.
Like most asian films, it slowly layered up as the story went along. The 'jump scares' were set up with the rising volume of music which didn't help much. I was reaching for the remote by the one hour mark but I'm glad i didn't FF thru to the end because there was pretty good twist. South Korea still reigns supreme, Japan then Thailand.

Destroyer. 2018.
9/10
A slow burn crime drama involving a cop who was involved in a sting years earlier.
Nicole Kidman is good in the role as a gritty burned out cop. The first hour is slow and i began to wonder, but when the 2nd hour kicked in so did the movie. It wasn't high action but the plot started to make alot of sense. The film jumps back and forth in time but it makes sense.
A review i read compared to it The French Connection and a comment on a podcast said it was like a South Korean film. Both of which i would agree with.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Clergy. 2018. Poland.
6/10
The film follows three priests and certain circumstances that they find themselves in. The trailer gives it a comedy kind of feel but that is only at the start when the are drinking. After that they don't interact with other. It has three different levels to it, each dealing which a different priest, one is doing alright, one has a pregnant mistress and the last is accused of child abuse. The tone of the movie depicts the church as very much looking after it self at the expense of the parish. It was just over two hours and maybe could have been cut a bit.
Overall it's good film, but pretty scathing of the church in general and the ways it manipulates the people, business and media.

The eyes of my mother. 2016.
10/10
A 76min black and white horror about a woman and her desire not to be alone.
Some of the best horrors are debut films, this is another example. Spoken in portuguese and english its a simple film with a limited cast that tells the story of a young girl/woman.
The composition of the scenes was thought out as to be disturbing without being stupidly gorey, the plot with the central character was sad but chilling. The B/W was a great touch as most of it was set at night.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

3/10
Of all the 'Best Pic noms 2019' for the 'Oscars' this was the only one that i thought i had a shot at watching all the way thru.
Didn't happen. I got an hour in to it and turn it off, flicked thru it on my laptop the next day and was glad that i did stop it.
It was co-written, directed by Peter Farrelly who directed Kingpin in '96 which is it good film, then a list of, really just braindead comedies.
Look them up.
It still had that element of stupidness to it, just in a mature form. The story was nice but really fucken simple.

Perfect Blue 1997. Japan.
9/10
I got an overdubbed version which was fine. The story is a 'pop singer' from a manufactured group is trying to make it as an actress.
Anime isn't something iv watched alot of, but this didn't have any fantastical creatures in it. The film is a psychological horror that does get fairly complicated in the last 30 mins. But it does it with a clear purpose. Strange film, but very engaging and not a simplistic pile of shit.
Like Green book.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

El Crimen Perfecto (A perfect crime.) Spain
9/10
Black comedy about a self absorbed department manager aiming for a top level position.
The only problem i had with the film was getting the subtitles to stay accurately with the dialouge, i keep having to adjust them.
Overall the film was really funny and didn't let up. Iv seen The day of the beast from the same film makers and it to was black comedy but longer and not quite as good.

Piercing. 2018
6/10
A bloke decides to kill a hooker. Things go wrong.
That is pretty much the whole plot of the film, but the script is based on a novel by the Japanese writer who also wrote Audition.
It's interesting and still retains a 'asian horror' feel to it, but even with a run time of 80 mins i still found it kinda boring in parts.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

The devils eye.
Dir. Ingmar Bergman. 1960
10/10
It wasn't really a 'repeat viewing' kinda film that earned it a full rating, it was the fact that the film was interesting at all times, slow but thoughtful, not too layered and the actors were really good. The trailer describes the film nicely. The 'priest' was also in The seventh seal.
A solid and enjoyable film.

Nude nuns with big guns. 2010
2/10
Someone gave me  copy of this film years ago, i watched it then and laughed, B-grade nonsense.
I wasn't really in the mood for anything heay duty, so i put it on again. I lasted 20mins before i picked up a drawing i wanted to finish.
The film is cheap, stupid and full of nudity and 'violence'.
Junk film brain rot. I wont be watching it ever again.

The tennants downstairs. Taiwan. 2016.
8/10
A landlord in a set of apartments fucks everyones lives up.
The story is engaging till the end when it gets quite a twisted ending that was still kinda screwy even thou it did set it out nicely.
Overall, the film was pretty creepy and really had me wondering, 'why the fuck is this bloke doing this?' which really acted as the main reason i kept watching. One i would consider watching agian.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Welcome to the sticks. 2008. France.
7/10
A lighthearted comedy about a post office manager who wants a transfer south but gets sent north instead. The plot is funny and for the most part revolves around the different way they 'northerners' talk. Being it's subtitled it was hard to read at first, the jokes really do rely on understanding french. As the film progressed it became less about the speech and more the situation with his wife back down south.
Enjoyable and interesting.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Seoul Station. 2016.
10/10
A 'prequel' to Train to Busan, but animated.
There is quite a story in this film and it doesn't take long to get used to the animation. As with all South Korean films it really well written and delivers a gut punch of a movie.
If you'v seen Train... this is worth the time to seek out. the horror and 'gore' factor of the zombies are dialed back a bit but it delivered for a me, a tense, exciting drama, funny in small parts but yet another example of why S.K. make the best horror.
