WWI - Austrian execution megathread

In addition to executing Austrian citizens who were captured fighting for enemy armies (for example, ethnic Italians as well as members of the Czechoslovak Legion), the Austro-Hungarian empire launched a massive campaign against civilian spies and saboteurs – both real and imagined – in occupied territories. Just slight suspicions on behalf of the Austrians would lead to summary executions, as documented in “Report Upon the Atrocities Committed by the Austro-Hungarian Army During the First Invasion of Serbia” by Rudolphe Archibald Reiss and Anton Holzer’s book “Das Lächeln der Henker”. On the Balkan front, Serbian civilians were treated exceptionally harshly, as were Ukrainian and Russian civilians on the Eastern front.

Some prisoners were shot, but many of them were publicly hanged to act as a supposed deterrent. Austria-Hungary used a distinct method of hanging in which the victim was first suspended on the gallows – often a small pole structure, a simple scaffold, or even a regular tree – and then quickly yanked downward by the hangman and his assistants, who continued to pull on the victim’s head and legs. Designed to quickly break the neck without the need for constructing large, complex trap-door gallows, the Austrians considered this to be an efficient and humane method of conducting large-scale executions. “Large scale”, however, doesn’t even begin to convey the magnitude of these killings; according to some estimates, Austro-Hungarian forces executed as much as 30,000 civilians in just the first few months of the war.
