Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Krampus. 2015.
10/10
A solid horror comedy with great effects about the shadow of St Nick. Seen it three times, still enjoyed it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6cVyoMH4QE&t=3s

The house that Jack built. 2018. Dir. Lars von Trier.
8/10.
New age American Psycho.
Iv never seen a Lars von Trier film so this was new for me. Well, what an experience that was. 2 and half hours of following 'Jack' as he goes thru five 'incidents'. Throughout the entire movie there is a dialouge between Jack and 'Verge' over the top.
The reviews i read of it were kinda mixed, and one said, "This is a pure Lars movie." Yeah, it definitely looked like one mans vision.
There was alot of images of paintings and WW2 death camp footage in it along with just crazy dialouge that was hard to keep up with at times.
The 'controversy' about the duckling scene and the woman and kids being hunted seemed overblown when seen in the context of the actual film. He's a fucken serial killer. The film was disturbing, and i applaud it for that. At times i felt creeped out. Not scared like watching a good horror, just 'uughh!!' at some of the things that happened. (When he shoots a woman in the back to finish her off).
Overall the film keep me interested and engaged, i did look at the running time at one point and groaned to myself that i still had a hour to go. But i wasn't bored and even found myself laughing at a few points.
The house that Jack does build, is a fucking masterpiece.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Terrified/Aterrados. Argentina. 2017.
10/10
Paranormal investigators get fucked up.
A solid ghost film from Argentina that deals with an investigation of a paranormal event.
Within the first 10 mins i was hooked and the movie delivered. The 'ghost hunters' weren't scaredy types and they were in three seperate locations with added a really good tension. The film has a flashback at the start to show what happened to one of the neighbours but it wasn't confusing.
Unsurprisingly there will be an american remake. Produced by Del Toro (The shape of water.) it will be directed by the bloke who directed and wrote the original.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

The Untamed. Mexico. 2017.
Tentacle sex.
7/10
Slow burn drama that builds till the last 15-20 minutes of the film. There are no 'explosions' of violence, but it does have a 'horror' ending of sorts. The main plot is a failing relationship with outside affairs on both sides. There is some scenes of bumping uglies, and it tended to more of a realistic nature than the garbage dished up in mainstream film.

Hagazusaa: A Heathen's Curse. Germany. 2017
Stripped down The Witch.
6/10
I tried to watch The Witch but it didn't work out. After watching this pile of crazy, ill think ill give it another go. Very little dialouge and long scenes with only one actress consistantly in the film. It definitely borrows from T.W. but strips it back to another level. And it is strange.
The film kept my interest simply because of the way the scenes were filmed. It makes you think about what is being presented, but the message was blunt.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Herod's law. Mexico. 1999
Political satire.
5/10
A party member is picked to be mayor of a small town.
Written by the bloke who did El Infierno (The Hell) and La Dictadura Perfecta (The perfect dictatorship). It is alot drier than his later films and kinda boring. Its purely a political film that demonstrates the corrupt nature of the political process and the violence used to get ones way or get rid of certain people.
No english subs in the trailer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qx7Ylt-Bwwc

May the devil take you. Indonesia. 2018.
4/10
Yawn, fuck you Netflix.
A 'Netflix original' that proves once again, if it was needed, they produce fucken garbage. The film had me interested within the first 20 mins, but that's when i started to notice that there was ALOT of story being fleshed out. Some of the effects were good, but after a while the story became more bloated that corpse in the sun. By the one hour mark i had run out of popcorn and patience.
The story became very familiar and just plain dumb.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Mother. 2009 South Korea.
10/10
From the director of The Host. A mother investigates a murder that her son has been connected to.
A crime drama that really twists and turns, a stunning thriller that is unpredictable and left me wondering why the fuck do i watch these South Korean movies.
Because they are actually REALLY GOOD. The plot couldn't be predicated. The 'mother' in the film runs a small herb shop and cares for her slightly stupid son. Not big on action, just layers of story. There were lots of 'clues' through out the film, but it only came together right at the end.

Deathstalker: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087127/
Fantansy/barbarian genre movie set in a chaotic evil society where even the "good guy" doesn't waste an opportunity to commit murder and rape women.
It actually has a decent plot with no large plot holes.
Great potential for triggering feminazis big_smile big_smile
Can warmly recommend it but then I am not known for my good taste in movies...

I got a copy off Pirate bay. Madeo. It's a great film, but slightly depressing, as most of their good ones seem to be.
thepiratebay10.org is the latest.

What keeps you alive. 2018.
2/10
Fastforwarding thru crap like this.
What seemed as a different take on the 'couple' goes to the cabin in the woods, one hunts the other. Was really just nonsense.
I was bored by the 36min mark.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bf1SSa9Hcc

The Sisters brothers. 2018
Didn't finish.
After giving up on the above movie i put this one on, it's a good western, bleak and dirty, packed with violence.
But in the end i guess it just wasn't for me. I might try again in the future.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Thelma. 2017. Norway.
7/10
RAW meets Carrie.
A very sterile physco-drama about a young lady, going off to Uni and then finding out that she has some sort of supernatural power.
She has seizures which cause her surroundings to react. It's a nearly two hour movie that in the first half is her realizing she's a leso, and the second half dealing with the power she has. It was a slow film, right from the start, that was engaging but testing as there was really no action or anything. The film remained steady. Reminded me of Let the right one in even thou that was Swedish it had a similar quietness about it.
There is going to be a remake.
Wow.
I'll be interested to see how well it does, or more to the point, doesn't, do at the 'box office'.

One cut of the dead. 2017. Japan.
10 outta fucken 10!!
A decent zombie comedy.
This was uploaded to Amazon streaming, much the film makers disgust. It was taken down, but the torrents have got it.
The first 30 mins is a non-stop-one-take. Impressive given how much they mover around and the effects that are done.
From there is jumps back a month to 'explain' how the whole idea is born. The final result was really funny and well thought out.
It would be spoiler to say how the whole things pans out but was worth the watch, if you don't mind reading subtitles.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

The Mimic. 2017. South Korea.
7/10
Not as layered as some the S.K. movies i watched, but i feel iv built up quite a tolerance to them. It got my attention right at the beginning and didn't let go. In the last 40 mins it showed how it all started, which then worked well at the end.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhGJPYHiW18

Ghost stories. 2018. England.
2/10
Fuck what a mess.
A set of three cases that a paranormal investigator is asked to look in to. The first was a entire flashback, then i lost interest, F.F. thru the next two, it seemed to have a interesting ending, but i didn't give a shit.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

A taxi driver. 2017. South Korea.
6/10
A taxi driver in Seoul takes a german reporter to southern city that is protesting the army run Gov in 1980.
This film is based on a true story about a reporter who got a taxi driver to him to the heart of the civil uprising in southern South Korea.
It starts kinda funny but soon loses that when they realize people are being beaten and shot. Standard drama plot points are checked off and although it is more heavy handed in some parts it felt more like a western style drama film.
Entertaining, but nothing really special.

Trauma. Chile
2/10
It had a good trailer and someone on 'twitter' wrote that they heard it was was in the same realms as A Serbian Film, Martyrs.
Read a couple of reviews, they OK'd it.
Not even. After about a steller opening, i lost track and didn't care, by the 36 min mark . It had a B-grade filming style and seemed to rely on flashbacks. The gore effects were good.

Suspiria. 2018. Dir Luca Guadagnino.
3/10
I watched the original when i read it was going to be remade. That was enough. Suspiria 1977 is it's own thing.
The reveiws i read and podcasts i listened to about this movie, never said half of it was subtitled. I will watch a subed movie, if i know.
Pluging the l.p didn't happen, so i just watched it and worked on a picture. Lasted an hour. It was well filmed and there is alot to take in, more than the original had.

The satanic rites of Dracula. 1973
6/10
Even thou it's a "Hammer" produced film, it still has an impressive seriousness about it. Peter Cushing could really sell the part.
The story itself was kinda lame but the scenes and settings carried it through as a 90 min budget horror.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja2GD0je1jA

Tetsuo. The Iron Man.
1989. Japan.
5/10
A cult classic of a bloke who slowly turns into a thing of iron. Strange plot, but the effects were pretty good. Near the end there was alot of stop motion which blended in really well.
The director edited it himself, and it shows, fast paced while alot of strange edits.

Burning. 2018. South Korea.
7/10
A slow physco/drama about a poor farming kid.
The film really only focuses on three people. Others pop in and out but the focus remains the trio. It's simple enough, but by the end it was interesting to notice that it made me wonder who was real or not.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Climax. 2018.
Director Gaspar Noe
4/10
Fame directed by the Marquis de Sade with a steadicam.
The 2002 film Irreversible is the only other movie iv seen by Gasper, and this is kinda on similar ground. Long steady cam shots, brightly lit hallways, the camera swinging around and following one person then another. The scenes themselves are well done, from the 5 min opening dance number to the way the steady cam shots when everyone is tripping.
But that wore thin after a while and the 'music' although it was background never seemed to stop.
Some brutal moments, but they were far and few.
Overall it bombards the viewer with light, sound, movement and really no plot.

I stand alone. 1998
Director. Gaspar Noe.
8/10.
Simple story of a butcher whose had a shit life, and is hell bent on wrecking a bunch of others.
96% of the movie has a voice over/internal dialouge by the butcher. The film doesn't have the swinging camera angles, but it does long scenes and a very downward angry spiral feel to it.
All in all. Great film!!

Mortal engines. 2018
1/10
I downloaded this for a workmate, based on a young adult novel.
Pete Jackson and fellow writers did the script. I was drawing up a transfer for a print so i was only kinda paying attention to it. The story moved rather quickly and just seemed to power on regardless. The whole thing seemed very lightweight and coming from a Y.A. novel it really showed. I stopped it after an hour, flicked to end and didn't care.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRsFc2gguEg

S is for Stanley.
6/10
A nice doco about an Italian bloke who worked with Stanley Kubrick.
The doco doesn't go cover the films of Kubrick rather it follows a unassuming bloke who becomes a close personal friend and invaluable aid to Kubrick. There are other docos such as Kubrick. A life in pictures that go into the films with more interviews with other people.
This solely focused really on the one bloke and his story.

3/10

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Force Maeure/Turist. 2014
9/10
A drama/comedy, thou there wasn't really much of the later, about a couple and there two children who witness an avalanche while in having lunch in a ski resort, he runs off with out them. The rest of the film goes into the breakdown of there relationship. as the husband struggles to accept that he couldn't 'protect' his family.
It's a good example of a 'What would you do?' situation. The film itself had little to no soundtrack and long scenes of dialouge,  the scenes were long and not edited every three seconds.
Sadly, there is a remake in the works.
Fucken hell.

At Eternity's Gate. 2018.
8/10
Crazy old Vincent.
A 'bio pic' about Vincent Van Gogh starring William Dafoe. The camera is hand-held and very shaky but it works in with the performance of Dafoe. He is much older than Van Gogh but really does a good job presenting the artist as a driven, somes manic painter.
The colours of the film itself reflect his paintings and although it only captures the end of his life, it presents it a heartfelt way.

Re: Rate the last movie you watched.

Evolution. 2015. France.
6/10
A surreal film with very little dialouge, no soundtrack and what seemed like no plot.
A bunch of little boys are being raised on a island with only women. Things get weird right from the start.
Nothing is explained, the dialouge that is in the film is really short and just seems to be basic conversation stuff.
The scenes and some of the props had the most thought put into them, but it made no attempt to help the viewer.
Entertaining and a bit frustrating.
